The 2-Minute Rule: How to Actually Start (Even When You Don't Feel Like It)

disciplinegetting startedmotivation

Motivation is a scam. The 2-minute rule is how you trick your brain into starting any habit — and why starting is the only part that matters.

Motivation is a scam

Everyone waits to feel like it before they start. That feeling never arrives on schedule. The people who actually build habits aren't more motivated than you — they've just made starting so small that it's impossible to say no.

That's the 2-minute rule: scale any habit down to something that takes two minutes or less.

Why it works

Your brain doesn't resist the habit — it resists the entry cost. A workout is an hour of effort. Two minutes of effort is nothing. Once you've started, momentum does the rest: most of the time you'll keep going, and when you don't, you still kept the streak alive.

The rule is not "do the habit for 2 minutes." The rule is "never break the chain." A 2-minute version still counts.

Put it in Habit King

  1. Create a quest with the 2-minute version of your habit ("Put on gym shoes", not "Gym 1h").
  2. Tick it every day, even on the bad days.
  3. Watch the streak counter do the psychological heavy lifting.

The XP doesn't care if it was a heroic session or a 2-minute one. Neither does the streak. Lock in.

Reading about discipline is easy. Tracking it is easier.
